I read Anna Dressed in Blood a few weeks ago, when I was going through a Red, Black and White book phase.
The cover for this book is haunting and atmospheric. It is mostly matte, with a few bits picked out with embossing and a glossy sheen. It’s stunning. However you should never judge a book by its cover…(except that I always do). So was it any good?
From the blurb:
Cas Lowood is no ordinary guy – he hunts dead people.
People like Anna. Anna Dressed in Blood. A beautiful, murderous ghost entangled in curses and rage. Cas knows he must destroy her, but as her tragic past is revealed, he starts to understand why Anna has killed everyone who’s ever dared to enter her spooky home.
Everyone, that is, except Cas…
Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills People story.
Theseus Cassio Lowood, Cas for short, is a ghost hunter. He tracks down restless spirit and dispatches their souls’ to the great beyond.
Obviously this is a secret, and no one except his mum (a white witch), and his mentor Gideon Palmer, know about Cas’s after school job.
People across the globe reach out to Cas, via a secret network of contacts, to tell him about suspected paranormal activity connected with recent deaths. Cas moves around a lot; he lost his father a few years ago, so it’s just him and his mum. Oh, and their cat and familiar, Tybalt.
This time, Cas has been called to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. In a spooky, abandoned house, a spirit known as Anna Dressed in Blood is killing anyone who enters her house. Cas has to stop her.
The kids at Cas’s new school take him to Anna’s house as a hazing ritual, and then trap him inside… but Anna doesn’t harm Cas.
Cas is strangely attracted to the girl he sees behind the terrifying spirit.
Will Cas defeat Anna, or will she kill him?
I loved this book! It really reminds me of the early Supernatural episodes, especially the pilot with the Woman in White hitching rides from people and then eviserating them.
This story is sweet and scary, sad and terrifying. If you love horror and gore you will love this book.
