The Complete X-Files: Revised and Updated Edition by Chris Knowles & Matt Hurwitz

I am a HUGE X-Files fan. I was so excited when my husband bought me the complete series on blu ray for Christmas. I got the chance to download the ARC of the updated Complete X-Files book from Netgalley in return for an honest review. The advanced copy only included the chapters covering seasons 1- 6 and the first film.
From the blurb:

Celebrate the return of one of the greatest sci-fi shows of all time with this detailed guide featuring exclusive material from the brand-new season.

Returning after more than a decade off the air, the 10th season of The X-Files promises to be one of the most anticipated television events of 2016. The Complete X-Files, Revised and Updated Edition is the only authorized debriefing on all ten seasons of the cult television series and the X-Files films created by Chris Carter. The book takes readers into Carter’s never-before-seen archives with explanations of unsolved plots, breakdowns of popular episodes, a discussion of the FBI’s paranormal investigations bureau, and other insider information. In addition to exclusive interviews with the cast and crew, The Complete X-Files, Revised and Updated Edition features exclusive material and unpublished photographs from season 10, giving fans a backstage view of the making of this sci-fi phenomenon.

This book is full of beautiful photographs and behind the scenes tidbits.  It would make a great present for someone, but not me…

As I said, I am a big fan. The information provided amounted to a couple of paragraphs for each episode, and I already knew most of it. I have watched every documentary, all of the deleted scenes, episodes with audio commentary and interviews with cast and crew. Basically this book is a memoir.

Considering this is positioned as must read for fans with “insider information” I just expected more. One example is about the season 2 episode Humbug, written by one of favourite writers Darin Morgan; in this episode Gillian Anderson actually ate a live cricket, but this isn’t mentioned in the book.

Also, this may just be because the version I read was an advanced copy, but it really didn’t translate well across devices on my kindle app.

Overall I gave this 3/5 stars on Goodreads.  It is a nice book, but not really something for big X-Files fans.

The Complete X-Files: Revised and Updated Edition is available from 23rd September R.R.P. £29.99.
